An early birthday gift, and, to my mind, more relevant than the Lukacs or Horkheimer volume everyone always supposes me to be reading.  Escaping Math 10 with a C+ turns out to have not been an impediment to studying number theory and Greek philosophy in early middle age; if anything, my capacity for abstract reasoning seems to have gone up, not down, in the intervening decades. Maybe Riemann zeta function graphs and cactus photographs are analogues of each other, attempts to get behind appearances, or under the world's skin.
