Chateaubriand's fine contempt lately much on my mind.

Tweet that got @pfbvan banned from Godawful New Twitter! Interesting that the site can't seem to eject Nazis or other right-wing nationalists from its platform, but brings the hammer down on anyone daring to criticize its new slow, ugly, ad-ridden interface.

RIP my uncluttered Twitter timeline, 2010-present. Now full of ads for sport utility pick-ups, waist shapers, inedible Subway sandwiches. The UXP genius responsible for this visual Tourette's can go die in a fire. I will help light it. (cc. @jack)

The best piece of writing on one of my perennial obsessions

"After lunch, while the other musicians were watching a movie on the bass player’s laptop, or making calls to set up other work, Fagen would sit at the piano and play a slow blues, and Becker would pick up his guitar and play along with him, and because they were separated by twenty or thirty feet it would take a moment to realize that they were reenacting a scene from thirty years ago in the common room at Bard."

"So I was thinking, I bought this 1200 year-old Chinese clay flute and I've been learning to play it. It only has a scale of five notes, and it is like blowing over a Coke bottle, but I've written this piece called 'The Plum Blossom,' and I think I can make it work. Oh, and I forgot to mention, instead of a bass, on this track Ernie Farrow will be playing a Middle Eastern string instrument you've never heard of. Don't worry, that's the only piece with the clay flute, the next tune is a blues number called 'Blues for the Orient,' and it's perfect for an oboe. Nobody does oboe blues, so this will be something new and exciting. The third piece is something I've come up with based on a Chinese musical scale."
